Observing Italy's political panorama during election was like watching a Sergio Leone film. It's a remake of The Good, the Bad and the Ugly: left wing Pier Luigi Bersani in the role of the good (but lacking the charisma to win in real life), the ugly is superbly interpreted by self-made revolutionary and comedian Beppe Grillo, and in the role of the bad - who keeps raising like a phoenix from the ashes - Silvio Berlusconi (will we never get rid of him?!).
But it's not just about the male leaders of Italy's old and new political movements. Last night I switched between two of the country's main TV channels - RAI UNO and LA 7 - to listen to the commentaries of politicians and journalists, who filled the studios to discuss election results.
On RAI UNO, in the transmission of the insufferable Bruno Vespa, the only woman I can remember was the TV presenter's assistant in a black lace dress, confirming a berlusconian Italy, where women are for decoration only. On LA 7 I found Piazza Pulita, a way better program, but - surprise - another studio round dominated by males. A fact made even more unbearable by the occasional out of studio appearance of Daniela Santanchè, Berlusconi's brainless supporter, who makes for some of the worst publicity Italian women can possibly get.
Come to think of it, there was one female leader I've kept hearing about all through election. Angela Merkel. Who is, yes you're right - German.
It's high time these outdated screenplays are being rewritten. Italy's political parties look like the Vatican - women are welcome to help with the cleaning, but err - no, no lead roles please.
Politics needs female leaders, not somewhere back in row two and three, but in that one position right up on the top. And if renovating the old school parties seems impossible, we may have to copy Beppe Grillo's recipe: DIY. Best of all, we already got the comedian!
