TOURING ITALY: YOUNG SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA October 2012

As a Swiss I can't but spread the voice about the current Italy tour of Zurich's Young Symphony Orchestra. The musicians from Switzerland are travelling south together with a classical music choir called Konzertchor MKZ (made up by a bunch of classic music loving singing youngsters from Zurich).

Autumn in Tuscany: what better setting for some classical music?

The Italy autumn tour of the two ensembles is really a Tuscany tour. Only one concert takes place in Umbria's Orvieto. All other gigs (excuse my language) are in some of Tuscany's best concert locations in Florence, Siena, Cortona, Montepulciano and Arezzo. 

The symphony orchestra will play works by Béla Bartòk and Beethoven. The choir will not just present tunes by Mozart, Schubert and Fauré, but also a small selection of Swiss folk songs (I'm already drying my first tear). 

The concert series has been organised by the Montepulciano based Cantiere Internazionale d'Arte, which is its 37th edition. The Cantiere organizes various cultural events, the most well known being a yearly classical music festival, which takes place very summer in Montepulciano, one of Tuscany's most beautiful wine towns. 

The two ensembles will tour Tuscany and Umbria from the 10th to the 19th of October 2012. Check the Cantiere Internazionale d'Arte Website for concert dates and exact locations.

WINE AND ARCHITECTURE: PETRA WINERY BY MARIO BOTTA

Southern Tuscany is home to a handful of wineries, which are often described as wine cathedrals.  The Petra vineyard near Suvereto (by architect Mario Botta) is an interesting example of this new approach in winery architecture. Storytellers at the Todo Modo bookshop in Florence

I may not be religious, but I totally worship the Todo Modo bookshop in Florence for its beautiful interior design, central location - a ten-minute walk from the station and Ponte Vecchio - and the cafè hidden among shelves and plants hanging from the roof. UqBar serves some of the best lunches to be had in Florence - especially for people who'd love to forego the usual Tuscan fare for a delicious miso soup . But Todo Modo does another thing well. The shelf-filled spaces in the back can be turned into a small theatre which makes for a great event space among all the books. I had my Across the Big Blue Sea book presentation there and was back last month for a Storytellers night - the first event of a great new series.   Linda and Steve, the team from the The Beehive Hostel in Rome have decided to take their storytellers nights to Florence, and Todo Modo has agreed to host them.
