OCTOBER IN TUSCANY II - OLIVE OIL FESTIVALS A GOGO

The last grapes have been picked, the leaves are turning reddish - it's time to get going on those olives. And Gerard Depardieu is with you on this one.
Tuscan olives waiting for their destiny
If you join in the fun at the Festa dell'Olio Nuovo in Trequanda, you may end up sharing your first Bruschetta of the season with the French actor. He is is as infatuated with Tuscany's green gold as you and me. In fact Gerard Depardieu uses Trequanda's fabulous extra virgin olive oil in his very own restaurant in ParisAnd whilst you can eat away he will have to cut out a minute on Sunday to hand out the 'Premio Giordana Carpi Oliva d'Oro'

A sea of nets all over Tuscany's olive groves
But it's not just Trequanda - all over Tuscany people are spreading out their nets to fish for olives. From now until the end of december you can join them at one of the olive oil presses (Frantoio in Italian) to get a taste of Tuscany's prime extra virgin olive oil - freshly pressed indeed. Ask for a bruschetta, a piece of toasted Tuscan bread, and pour the freshly pressed oil on top of it. To die for!

The olive presses are open round the clock from October till the end of December. And many a village uses the fresh extra virgin olive oil as yet another excuse to have a Sagra - a local festival.

Weekend of the 22nd/23rd of October 2011:

FESTA DELL'OLIO NUOVO in TREQUANDA (40 min South of Siena in the beautiful Crete Senese area). On Saturday you can join the 6km guided trekking from Petroio, where you can visit the lovely Terracotta museum.
Whereas on Sunday 30th of October you can join a guided walk from Trequanda to Montisi, another beautiful medieval village close by.

In case you are worried you won't get a bite to eat with Gerard Depardieu in town, try these events a bit further South.

SUL FILO DELL'OLIO in MONTIANO, a lovely village 15 min. south of Grosseto, which will celebrate its olive oil for the whole weekend.

FESTA DELL'OLIO in ARCILLE's olive oil presses. 20 min inland from Grosseto towards Scansano. So off-the-beaten path that I couldn't even find a website for it. Definitely worth going if you want to meet the real Tuscany and its people. Or if you just happen to travel on a shoestring budget - FREE BRUSCHETTA FOR EVERYBODY from 4pm on Saturday and Sunday, which is as close as you can get to a free meal in Tuscany.

WINE AND ARCHITECTURE: PETRA WINERY BY MARIO BOTTA

Southern Tuscany is home to a handful of wineries, which are often described as wine cathedrals.  The Petra vineyard near Suvereto (by architect Mario Botta) is an interesting example of this new approach in winery architecture. At Petra the world-class architect went beyond designing an impressive wine cellar, but also included the outlay of the vineyards in his aim to form a contemporary agricultural landscape.  Main building of the Petra Winery in Suvereto If it is true that the way to good wine starts in the he vineyard, it is also true that only the quality of the cork,  the design of the label,  and the beauty of the bottle shape will bring the consumer's experience to full circle.  Taking this thought further it's obvious that the birthplace of a good or even fantastic wine, is yes the vine and its grapes, but also the winery building in particular and the whole estate in general.  If you know any of Botta's works,  you'll recog...

Storytellers at the Todo Modo bookshop in Florence

I may not be religious, but I totally worship the Todo Modo bookshop in Florence for its beautiful interior design, central location - a ten-minute walk from the station and Ponte Vecchio - and the cafè hidden among shelves and plants hanging from the roof. UqBar serves some of the best lunches to be had in Florence - especially for people who'd love to forego the usual Tuscan fare for a delicious miso soup . But Todo Modo does another thing well. The shelf-filled spaces in the back can be turned into a small theatre which makes for a great event space among all the books. I had my Across the Big Blue Sea book presentation there and was back last month for a Storytellers night - the first event of a great new series.   Linda and Steve, the team from the The Beehive Hostel in Rome have decided to take their storytellers nights to Florence, and Todo Modo has agreed to host them. Whether residents or just travelling through, English speakers will have great fun...
